We start out with a few statistics about women in India. More stats to be added.

The enrollment of girls in the primary stage increased eight fold from 5.4 million in 1950-51 to 50 million.
The infant mortality rate declined to 70 as against 200 at the time of Independence. The total fertility rate has also declined to 3.6% (1991 figure).
The female work participation has gone upto 22.6%.
To meet the increasing needs of women and children, the outlay has gone up from Rs. 40 million in the First Plan to Rs.2 trillion in the Eighth Five Year Plan.
Life expectancy for females at birth which was just 31.6 years in 1951 has risen to 59.1 years in 1986-87.
Under Integrated Child Development Services more than 3945 ICDS projects have been undertaken benefiting one crore 7 million children and 3.7 million mothers all over the country.
With the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments of 1993 about one million women are expected to emerge as leaders and decision makers at the grass root level. One-third of the local bodies are headed by women.
